Title
Mary Reyes with Rabbits
Description
Maria "Mary" Villanueva Reyes was an elementary school teacher in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo, Philippines, before she came to the United States in 1935. She moved to the United States after she married Salvador Reyes, who had returned home to look for a wife. Family members said that she felt lonely after first coming to the United States. She was the only Filipina woman at Steele Ranch where she lived with all Filipino men working with her husband, Salvador. As Aida Betita explains, Mary wanted to return to the Philippines after she came here because it was very lonely. She said her only friends were the chickens and rabbits. Original photograph from Maria Reyes's album.
