Title

Tomas Velarde, Aida Betita's father

Description

Portrait of Aida Betita's father, taken in the Philippines. Mr. Velarde was a high school teacher. He was a Baptist, and went to Baptist school. He liked Shakespeare so his children were named after Shakespearean characters. Sons were named Julius, Augustus, Caesar. Daughter was named Julieta, "Eta", after her brother Julius, who died in infancy. Youngest son was Manuel, who eventually moved to Kentucky. Manuel received M.D. in Philippines, moved to California where he worked as family practitioner. He was eventually licensed to practice medicine. Manuel ended up in Kentucky because, according to Juliet Betita, he wanted to be where it snowed. Caesar and Augusto came to the U.S. in 1950s.
